A House Is On Fire

A House Is On Fire

© HOUSE by DELAFOI

A house caught fire on the street where I live. It's on the other end so we're totally safe where we are, but the people living in the burning house are desperately trying to save themselves.

A lot of them get help and sanctuary in the houses close to theirs, but it's getting a bit crowded, so more and more are coming our way. We can see them knock on every door along their path, some of them open, others remain closed. And while some house owners tell them to wait to see if there's anything they can do, others refuse to help.

- Meanwhile their house burns intensely.

We're several people living in my house and we've seen our far away neighbors running our way for quite a while now. Some of my roommates have already decided they don't want to help and they're trying to convince the rest of us to force the people back to their burning house. Others are afraid that there's not enough room and that the people escaping will try to change all the rules we have comfortably settled in the house.

- Meanwhile their house burns intensely.

Some think we can't afford any more changes and they are worried that those who come running might be lying about their house being on fire. Or worse, they might not be residents of the burning house.

- Meanwhile their house burns intensely.

But some of us have already unlocked the front door, waving at the people fleeing, saying "...you can stay here". Some of them are already safe inside our house. Because we know that our place is probably the safest house on the street and that we haven't had a real fire here for hundreds of years. We know that we're far away from the heat and that there's plenty of room for everybody.

And we tell our far away neighbors that if they want, they can stay as long as they like. And if they ever want to go back to their house once the fire is out, we could go together and help rebuild everything again.

We tell them this with our arms and hearts open. We tell them this because we are humans, and together we are capable of marvelous things.

- Meanwhile the house burns intensely.
